$18 : I have a 16mnth old ferret, Toby, who weighs in at 2.6lbs,

Question : I have a 16mnth old ferret, Toby, who weighs in at 2.6lbs, 18inches long. Nice shiny eyes and healthy coat. He is a marshall ferret. The problem is that he had several near death bouts of diarrhea the first year we had him. Marshall ferrets are fed only marshall food and are supposed to stay on that diet for the first 18mnth’s of life according to pet shop papers. However, I have had to change his diet to ground 1tbspn Marshall ferret active food, 1/2tspn ground totally ferret active food and 1/2 tspn purreed gerbers chicken baby food. My problem is that when I try to thicken his food thicker than a gruel, he refuses to eat. His stools are now normal, no bouts of diarrhea in 6mnths. Will the liquid diet harm him or cause problems with his teeth or possible further digestive problems? Thank you XXX XXXX time! Much appreciated, a proud ferret mommy.

Answer : Hello, I see no issue with the gruel diet. The diet will only add more water to the daily intake. You may see him compensate for this by drinking less water. If you are worried about dental health then you can brush the teeth on a daily basis. Now it may sound cruel, but the way to hold a ferret to get them to hold still and make it extremely easy to brush the teeth is to hold him up by the scruff with one hand and brush the teeth with the other. As long as the intestines are happy your ferret will be happy. Thanks XXX XXXX question J Bache, DVM
